Television News is something that almost all people experience in their weekly activities, and is something that influences everyone. Whether you watch the local 5:00 news, or if you watch CNN or 60 minutes, or even Late Shows or entertainment news you are being pulled into almost another world. The world of television news is one of its own and is a huge source of media. But a question that needs to be considered is How credible is television news?
While checking my mail yesterday, something very exciting and unusual happened, I actually had mail in my mailbox. When opening the small 3 x 3 box my face lights up with joy because there is actually something in it. Over-excited by a red envelope I cannot wait to see who was thinking about me and what exactly they were thinking. I tear the paper open and read it joyfully. The front is full of bright colors and a cute, furry animal saying, "This is not a card to remind you how much you miss me". I open it and the inside reads, "but rather to tell you how much I miss you". If that wasn’t enough, there was a short note from my mom telling me how much she loves me and can’t wait to see me. This small sentiment brings a small tear to my eye. But Why? Why is this card a bigger gesture than a phone call or e-mail? Why does it mean so much to me?
Greeting cards have become a source of media in the last decade. The idea that someone can send their special feelings in a card without getting to personal has made communicating easier. When I get a card from my parents, a friend or my boyfriend, I know that it took effort for them to pick out a card, right a small note inside, seal the envelope, pay 0.37 cents for the stamp and finally mail it out. This process takes more than a simple phone call and to me it means more. The process of picking a card is hard enough. With all the choices out there one I almost get stressed over trying to find the perfect one, but I know it’s out there and I am determined to find it.
When reading the card from my mom I could hear her saying the word on the card to me, it fit her sentiments and her personality perfectly. The fact that Hallmark knew what my mom, and a million other people are thinking is an amazing talent. They way I feel when I am reading a card from someone I love is almost indescribable.
Greeting cards help people express emotions that they normally could not, or simply to let someone know that you are thinking about them. I enjoy getting cards in the mail and in addition I love sending them. I hope the receiver of my card feels the same joy as I do when opening my mailbox and seeing the card. However there is a bigger issue to look at here. Has the greeting card industry shut down open communication? Because people can just send a card rather than calling or talking to that person, being so open is not something that a lot of people do. In addition it seems as if there is a card for everyday of the year, are people hiding from communicating? This is an issue to keep in mind next time you send a card.
The two original Yes Men were guests on Sundays "On The Media" program and critiqued the tactics used by protesters at the Republican National Convention. Furthermore they explained a successful method for conveying a message. They expressed their opinion that protesters should try and distance themselves from the typical overdramatic image that many people equate with them. They state that during the Republican National Convention protesters should use the media to convey their message rather than trying to hopelessly convert the delegates directly. A successful example that the Yes Men give was the unemployment line. This line was a physical line of people in New York City that stretched from downtown to Madison Square Garden holding up pink slips. This made a much bigger statement and a more profound impact than attacking people and creating chaos.
