Hi TJ,

If I were feeling like a wise guy, I'd respond

"How many students is it reasonable to have in a calculus class?"

The point of course, it that "it depends." I teach in a graduate
program where it's largely my job to do research and produce
researchers. (My teaching is basically aimed at that, as part of the
research program. Of course, I do have some other responsibilities).

Under these circumstances, I've produced about 15 Ph.D.s in 20 years
- Typically I have a group of 6 or 7 students at any given time,
ranging from beginners to those who are about to finish up. The
community helps; older students mentor younger ones. As some move
out, others take their place.

But, this system is optimally geared for such production. It nearly
kills me, and would be impossible in a place that wasn't so
research-focused. And, I'm sure there are highly respected research
mathematicians at research universities who've produced a total of 5
Ph.D. mathematicians over their full careers!

Cheers,
Alan
