New Mexico State University is searching for several tenure-track assistant
professor positions. One is in Mathematics Education; it is joint between
Mathematical Sciences and Curriculum and Instruction (see below). The
others are in Mathematical Sciences and open to any specialty, including
Mathematics Education (see
<http://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/NMSU/1467>www.mathjobs.org/jobs/NMSU/1467).

The joint position in Mathematics Education provides an opportunity to work
with graduate students earning a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a concentration
in Mathematics Education. It also calls for teaching content courses in
mathematics, as well as teaching preservice teachers in both departments.

The intellectual climate at NMSU is favorable for research in mathematics
education. Several research mathematicians at NMSU are interested in
education and, for example, participate in a summer program for middle
school teachers.

As for our own work, currently we are writing (with Mary Shepherd) a paper
on beginning undergraduates' reading of mathematics textbooks. Also, we
are working on an ongoing design experiment, a course to help beginning and
potential mathematics graduate students improve their proving skills, and
collaborating with a mathematician to develop a "proving supplement" to the
undergraduate real analysis course. The findings from these projects
should also be useful at an earlier level, and perhaps in problem solving.

Las Cruces and New Mexico are pleasant places to live. They are more
convenient and less expensive than the coasts and large cities. The
climate is good and there are artistic and cultural opportunities, and
nearby hiking and rock climbing. Medical care is good. Finally, the city
of El Paso is only 40 miles away.
