Dear friends connected to Mathematics Education,
Apologies in advance for any cross-mailings but hopefully the
information below will be of interest to you.
We are very pleased, honoured and excited that our next International
Conference will be held in South Africa in 2011 co-hosted by Rhodes
University at Grahamstown, with Professor Marc Schafer as Chairman of
the Local Organising Committee.
You may not be aware that our Project, which was founded in 1986, and
all of our conferences, ten so far starting in 1999, are entirely
educational and philanthropic, non-profit making and non-commercial. All
of our work to help innovate the teaching and learning of mathematics is
done on an unpaid voluntary basis, so we rely on the goodwill and
cooperation of colleagues world-wide to spread the word about our
conferences and, we hope, to encourage students and local teachers to
attend.
Even though we have no direct funding as such we do try with our limited
sponsorship funds to assist especially teachers and students from the
host country to attend our conference, and we always include a special
two day programme for local teachers at the beginning of the conference.
The 2011 Conference will be held from September 10 (arrival day)-16 so
we are planning our special local teachers programme for the two days
Monday/Tuesday September 11-12.
We would be most grateful if you could support us in one or more of the
following ways:
- Post the Preliminary Announcement below on any electronic bulletin
boards, email lists and journals you know of
- Print a hard copy and pin the notice on your Department Notice Board
- Encourage your colleagues, your students, and any local teachers you
have contact with, to attend the conference
- Prepare and send me your own proposal to present a workshop or paper
at our conference
- Enquire now about local funding to help you and/or colleagues,
students, teachers to attend the conference in 2011
Please let me know if you have any questions or need further
information. We thank you in advance for whatever help you can give us
and we look forward very much to meeting and working with you in South
Africa in 2011!

Marc Schafer, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee
