[ARUME] Committees --- reminder

ARUMErs,

I have had several responses to my email about committees and I will be
collating them and preparing a report to the Executive Board this weekend.
So if you have not responded and wish to do so, please send me an email
by the end of the day on Friday.

It will probably take a week or so for the Executive Board to work out all
of the committee appointments, but thoseof you who have volunteered (and
maybe some others if we do any arm-twisting) should hear fairly soon after
that.

Following is another copy of my original message.

Now that we have our listserv up, the work of ARUME can begin in earnest. This means, as with all organizations, committees. At the organizational meeting,
a number of committees were suggested and the Executive Board took that input
and made up a list. This is preliminary, and any suggestions you have for
additions can be sent to the list. The Executive Board will act on them,
perhaps after some discussion. I am sure that as our work develops, we will
see many areas of activity that will need committees, such as a nominating
committee. But to get things going, the Executive Board thought the
following list is a good start. I have added some notations where I thought
it appropriate.

Bylaws. This committee, which will include, among others, some officers, will
take the bylaws approved at San Antonio, consider revisions, and
shepherd a revised version through an approval process.

Guidelines. This committee will work up a set of guidelines for a mathematics
department with RUMErs on its faculty. Because there is an MAA
committee working on general guidelines for math departments, and
we wanted to work closely with that group, the Executive Board
felt that it should not be delayed and so we asked Marilyn
Carlson to chair it. She has already made contact with the
MAA Committee and is beginning to think about the document.

A chair is not enough and so we will need some members.

Newsletter. Should we have one? Electronic or paper? Funding? Once such
decisions are made, the committeee has to produce it.

Website. Someone at San Antonio volunteered to set up a WEBsite for us. I
did not write down the name and I have not heard anything. Would that
person or anyone interested, please jump in?

Mentoring. Maybe this is not the right name, but this is the committee to
work with people just getting started in RUME and wanting help on
how to go about it. Mickey McDonald and George Litman will be
working on this, but they will need plenty of help from a lot of
people who have done research as well as a beginner or two to
                        help them understand the issues.

Literature. It has been suggested that we develop and maintain a data base
consisting of an annotated listing of RUME literature. This
could relate to eventual reviewing of published articles.

Now what we need are committee members. Please volunteer by sending me an
email message. It is probably simpler if you send it just to me rather than
the whole list, so send it to:

          edd@cs,gsu.edu

How about doing this by February 19? I will collate the results and the
executive board will make the appointments.

Please think hard about the commitment you wish to make to working in ARUME
and keep in mind that if no one volunteers for a committee, then we can take
this as a sign that the membership does not wish to have that particular
activity.

I look forward to your responses.
